Large-scale demolition.One level at a time.

A multi-storey concrete structure taken down with long-reach and standard excavators — on a tight site surrounded by live buildings, with day and night working fronts.

The project

A big structure on a small footprint

The site held a multi-storey reinforced concrete structure with sections at very different heights, sitting close to neighbouring buildings and access roads on Palm Jumeirah.

Work was split into fronts: long-reach machines took down the high sections from outside the structure, while standard excavators processed the lower levels, separated the concrete and steel, and kept the work face clear for loading.

Long-reach + mechanical
What made it difficult

Three challenges, one site

The photos make the constraints obvious: work at height, very little room around the structure, and dense reinforcement in every element.

01

Height & reach

The upper sections were well beyond a standard machine. Long-reach equipment worked them from outside the structure, with the breaking point controlled from the ground.

02

Tight surroundings

Neighbouring buildings, boundary walls and access roads left little space for machines, stockpiles and trucks — so every zone had to be planned.

03

Dense reinforcement

Thick concrete and heavy rebar slow down breaking and processing. Concrete and steel were separated on site before loading out.

Context
Demolition next to the city never stops being a design problem.

Elevated connections, scaffolding and occupied neighbours define where machines can stand and how each section can come down.

How the site was run

Control at every work front

Exclusion zones & banksmen

Barrier lines kept people away from the breaking face, with a banksman guiding machine movements.

Work split by height

Long-reach machines on the high sections, standard excavators on lower levels and processing.

Concrete & steel separated

Concrete and steel separated at the work face before loading out.

Planned load-out

Truck access and loading positions organised around the active fronts.
